Tetrachromacy: Can an Online Test Confirm It?
An online test cannot tell you whether you are a tetrachromat.
An ordinary RGB screen lacks the independent color information needed to investigate tetrachromacy.
You can try the matching activity below as a screen demonstration and ask a color-vision researcher about appropriate assessment.
A short screen activity with a clear result boundary
Quick answer
Try the color matching activity below, but do not use its score to decide whether you are a tetrachromat.
This page gives you a complete, eight-round screen task and explains each result band. It checks whether you can match a repeated RGB patch on this display. A consumer screen cannot show a fourth independent color channel, so this activity cannot confirm or rule out tetrachromacy.
Start the screen activityMatch the patch
Look at the target patch. Choose the one of the three options that uses the same on-screen color. There are eight rounds; you can stop at any time.
Target patch
Match this color to one option.
This activity runs in your browser. It does not ask for an account or payment, and it does not save your answers.
How to read the activity result
The score is the count of rounds in which you selected the identical RGB patch. These bands describe performance on this small screen-matching task only; they are not tetrachromacy categories.
Most choices matched the target in this run. That indicates strong consistency on these displayed patches, not an extra cone type.
Some choices matched and some did not. This single run cannot separate display conditions, attention, memory, or ordinary color matching.
Few choices matched in this run. Check the screen and viewing conditions if you retry; this result does not diagnose a vision condition.
No result band here means “tetrachromat,” “not a tetrachromat,” or a probability of either. The activity does not measure the biological feature named in the search term.
Why a screen activity cannot verify tetrachromacy
Research on human tetrachromacy uses controlled light stimuli and methods designed to test whether color matching requires more than three independent primaries. An ordinary RGB display emits its colors through three channels; it cannot present the fourth independent stimulus needed to establish that property.
Newcastle University’s Tetrachromacy Project says an online test cannot investigate tetrachromacy and describes research follow-up beyond a brief screen activity. Cleveland Clinic likewise says there is no reliable online test and describes specialized equipment and controlled research settings. Our matching activity is therefore a demonstration of a limited display task, not a substitute for research assessment.
If you are looking for a tetrachromat test or a way to test tetrachromatic vision, use this page to understand the screen limitation and then contact a color-vision researcher or eye-care professional about appropriate assessment.
What this activity cannot tell you
- It cannot detect a fourth cone type, establish a fourth color-processing channel, or confirm a biological diagnosis.
- It cannot rule tetrachromacy out, because every round is generated with ordinary screen colors.
- It is not a clinical color vision exam and does not measure your vision across calibrated lighting or research instruments.
- Your screen settings, ambient light, viewing angle, and attention can affect what you see on this page.
Tetrachromacy test questions
Can a tetrachromacy test on a phone or computer confirm the trait?
No. This activity uses ordinary RGB screen colors. Newcastle University says online tests cannot investigate tetrachromacy; research assessment requires stimuli and procedures beyond a standard screen.
How should I interpret the result?
Read it as the number of matching choices in this particular activity. The three bands describe task consistency only; none indicates whether you have tetrachromacy.
How is the score calculated?
One point is added for each round where your choice is the identical RGB color assigned to that round’s target. The total is compared with the three activity bands above. This scoring rule is authored for this page and is not a clinical or research cutoff.
Can I take a tetrachromacy test at home for free?
You can complete this browser activity without an account or payment, but it cannot test for tetrachromacy. A screen result should not be treated as evidence that you do or do not have the trait.
Is this the same as a tetrachromat test?
No online RGB matching activity can establish tetrachromacy. The phrase “tetrachromat test” may describe what people search for, but the result on this page only describes an ordinary screen-color matching task.
online test for tetrachromacy
No. This activity uses ordinary RGB screen colors, so it cannot confirm or rule out tetrachromacy.
tetrachromatic vision test
This page matches repeated RGB patches on your display. The activity cannot determine whether you have tetrachromatic vision.
real tetrachromat test
No online RGB activity can establish tetrachromacy. Ask a color-vision researcher or eye-care professional about appropriate assessment.
Research sources and page method
The activity was authored for this page. Its score bands are descriptive bins for the eight-round task, not thresholds from a published tetrachromacy study.
